Jewish refugee child upon arrival in Harwich, 1938

A girl from Berlin, who has fled from Germany to Great Britain, is received by a nurse and an official of the immigration service. Over 200 Jewish children from Berlin orphanages came to Great Britain with the little girl. It was the first of several child refugee transports. The last transport occurred in September 1939, shortly before the outbreak of WWII. Various refugee organizations financed the undertaking and sought foster parents and homes for the children. Within a short time volunteers in Germany made lists of especially endangered children. Children who were in danger of being deported, orphans and children whose parents were already in concentration camps. Between December 1938 and September 1939 the lives of over 10, 000 children were saved in this way
