Kaiser Wilhelm II visiting Roman Fort, Saalburg, Germany

The German Kaiser Wilhelm II on his visit to the Roman fort Saalburg, which he financed heavily from his private funds. Initiated by Wilhelm II in 1897, the remains of a Roman castle were excavated, restored and rebuilt here at great expense. On the Kaiser's arrival at the cornerstone ceremony, he is greeted by notables who are dressed up as Roman prefects, while Roman Legionnaires in stage costumes form an honorary guard and musicians blow fanfares under imitation Roman eagles.
