This sketch by Wilhelm Kaulbach is an allegory of the rediscovery of arts by King Ludwig I. At his feet, Kalliope, the Muse of epic poetry, science, philosophy and string playing, as well as the Muse of Eros and eroticism. She is the wisest of the nine classical Muses. King Ludwig asks her to raise at his hand movement. In the background are scenes of buildings and sculptures under construction, commissioned by King Ludwig I. King Ludwig I was regarded as an art patron and was himself a passionate poet
