King Ludwig II of Bavaria as Knight of Saint
This photograph by court photographer Max Stuffler shows Ludwig II of Bavaria shortly before his accession to the throne, dressed in the costume of a knight of Saint George. This order is a Bavarian order of knights named after Saint George. It was founded in the 12th century at the time of the crusades. After Ludwig II's incapacitation on June 9, 1886, his uncle Luitpold took over the affairs of state of the Bavarian kingdom as Prince Regent. Due to his activity as the builder of many famous Bavarian castles, King Ludwig II was given the nickname Fairytale King
