King Ludwig II at a meeting of the Order of Knight George

This contemporary representation shows King Ludwig II (left) in the Munich Residenz, the official residence of the Bavarian King, at a chapter meeting, on the occasion of a St. George Knight Festival under his leadership. This order is a Bavarian order of knights, named after St. George. and was founded in the 12th century at the time of the Crusades. King Ludwig II drowned in 1886 in the Wuermsee, today Lake Starnberg. After his deposition on June 9, 1886, his uncle Luitpold took over as Prince Regent the governmental affairs of the Bavarian kingdom. Due to his activity as builder of many well-known Bavarian castles, King Ludwig II received the nickname Fairy Tale King'. Undated photo, presumably in the 1870s
