The Legend of the Women of Weinsberg, 1140
The Staufen king Konrad III granted the women of Weinsberg the right to leave the besieged city with whatever they could carry on their shoulders. To the surprise of the besiegers, the women carried their men out of the city and thus saved their lives. Painting by Moritz Schmidt (1804-1871)
