Liberated slaves in Zanzibar, 1888

Africans rescued from slavery in front of the English consulate in Zanzibar in 1888. Arab traders, mostly from Oman, had settled on the East African coast since 1840, and from there managed a slave trade for the markets of Central Arabia. European powers stopped these practices at the turn of the century and thus expanded their colonial empires in Africa
