Lower Street in the Jewish district of Eisenstadt, 1931
The Lower Street of the Jewish district in Eisenstadt is closed off with an iron chain. The so-called Sabbath chain from the year 1875 was used to close off the street in which the Synagogue stood on the holy day of rest, the Sabbath. This way no vehicles could drive through and disturb the Sabbath peace. After the expulsion of the Jews from Vienna in 1670/77, Prince Paul Esterhazy welcomed the evicted Jews to his lands under his special protection. He had a street laid for the Jews in Eisenstadt on the Meierhofgrund and gave the settlers letters of protection that were always renewed. In the year 1921 the Jewish community of Eisenstadt was the only Jewish administered community in the Republic of Austria
