March of Muslim groups out of Jerusalem, 1915

In the spring of 1915, a group of Muslim volunteers marched out of Jerusalem for the Turkish army. The Islamic clergy of the Ottoman Empire proclaimed Holy War at the outbreak of war in 1914. This led to a popular uprising of Arab tribes against the English. However, since the English paid large amounts of gold to the sheikhs of the tribes on the Arabian Peninsula, they proved to be much more successful, thanks in part to the efforts of Colonel Lawrence, and the jihad was unsuccessful
