Model for a Luther monument at the Veste Coburg, 1914
The photograph from 1914 shows a model for a Luther memorial on the southwest side of the outer Zwingermauer of the Veste Coburg between two powder towers. Sculptor Eberhard Encke had made this model out of plaster and wood after a competition. The inscription on the architrave reads: I will not die / But live / And proclaim the works of the Lord'. Luther had written these words of the psalm in the niche of his window during his stay at the Veste in 1530. On the pedestal is written: The word they should / let stand'. The monument was to be completed by 1917, in time for the four hundredth anniversary of the Reformation
