The photograph shows the Muhlendamm Colonnade in Berlin-Mitte in 1888, when construction work began on the expansion of the Muhlendamm Lock, for which the colonnades had to be demolished. In the background the turrets of the Muhlendamm building can be seen, behind them the spire of the Nikolai Church (left) and the tower of the Red City Hall (right) stand out
