Painting of Luther's defense speech before the Imperial Diet
This engraving by Karl Remshart appeared in 1721 for a peace festival, in memory of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. In 1730 Johann Michael Roth published an anthology of the peace paintings that includes this engraving as well. The engraving shows Luther at the Diet of Worms during a defense speech of his doctrine before Emperor Charles V, who sits in the middle under the canopy, spiritual dignitaries (l.) and secular princes (r.)
