Painting Theodor Billroth in the auditorium by Adalbert Se

The doctor Dr. Theodor Billroth performed in 1881 as first surgeon a successful gastric resection as partial removal of the lower stomach portion. The painting by Adelbert F. Seligmann (around 1880) shows in the background Billroth (center) in the auditorium with his students. In front of the painting is left the preparation of the first gastric resection in case of cancer which was performed by Billroth and right is the corresponding preparation of the later deceased patient due to metastases in the liver. The painting and the preparations could be seen in the hall Austria at the International Hygiene Exhibition in Dresden in 1931
