Parade of the Avanguardisti in front of Victor Emmanuel III

Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy (3rd from right), takes in a parade of youthful Avanguardisti who, although wearing sportswear, shoulder rifles and carry cartridge bags. The Avanguardisti, to which the male youths of the Opera Nazionale Balilla belonged, took part every year in early September in a Campo Dux in Rome, as they did in 1935. The Campo Dux was a tent camp lasting several days, at which the sporting-military aptitude of the youths was put to the test
