Performance of a peepman
This photo shows one of the oldest forerunners of film history, the Guckkastenmaenner (the peep-show men), they were later replaced by the laterna magica. This photo, after a contemporary drawing by the painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmueller, shows the Guckkastenmann in a farm barn with his picture box mounted on a wooden carrying rack. The viewers are offered pictures in the box and matching stories. The peep show men were mainly in Vienna and appeared on large, busy places
