Queue in front of a bakery, 1917
A long queue has formed in front of a bakery in an alley. People are waiting to buy flour. Due to the long war, for which the political and military leadership in Germany did not take precautions, there were supply problems. These culminated in the Kohlruebenwinter ('Turnip Winter') of 1917/1918, in the course of which many old, sick people and children died of exhaustion and malnutrition
