Railway construction in the desert, 1897
British soldiers and locals are building the railway line from Wadi Halfa to Khartoum in todays Sudan. It is intended to enable the British advance to Khartoum, which is besieged by the Mahdists. The Mahdi uprising from 1881 to 1889 was a rebellion against Anglo-Egyptian rule in the Sudanese provinces. It was only in 1898 when the British succeeded in finally destroying the Mahdi's dominion
