Rebellious slaves surrender to British intervention troops

The undated illustration shows a scene during the slave revolt in the French colony of Saint Domingue, today's Haiti, between 1791 and 1803. At the request of the defeated white colonialists in 1794 a British expeditionary corps landed with 8, 000 soldiers, which were able to temporarily push back the rebellious slaves. But 10 years later on 1 January 1804 the colony had to be recognized as the Empire of Haiti an independent state
