With the research ship and steam schooner Samoa, the explorer Prof. Dr. Otto Finsch and Captain Eduard Dallmann undertook extensive research voyages in the South Seas in 1884 on behalf of the consortium formed by Adolph von Hansemann. During these exploratory voyages were established relationships with the natives and land acquisitions were also practiced on many islands
