Water buffalo swim through a canal in the Pontine plain south of Rome in 1924. Before the marshy plain was drained under Mussolini in the 1930s, farmers herded all their buffalo together every six months and let them swim downstream along the canals. In the process, the animals pulled out the numerous creepers that kept growing back, as well as litter. After the action, cleaned canals remained
