Sachsengaenger (travelers to Saxony) in Berlin, 1911
Sachsengaenger (seasonal migrants who work in Saxony in summer) in Berlin in front of a train station. The Westerwald pedlary, the Sachsengaengerei (travelling to Saxony) or Landgaengerei (travelling to the country) came to life, as the pedlary, during and after the wars of liberation. Since the conditions in the homeland were very poor at that time, some Westerwalder people started a new life in a foreign land by doing pedlary trade. At the same time they did not abandon the relations with the homeland, in winter, when the business went bad, they often returned home. Mostly it was Saxony where the Westerwaelder people moved, thus the name
