Schwertmal - Sword memorial in Bochum, 1935

View of the Bochum Memorial in the form of a sword with the inscription Der Gott, der Eisen wachsen lassen, der wollte keine Knechte (The God who made iron grow, did not want slaves), the opening lines of the Vaterlandlied by Ernst Moritz Arndt. The memorial was erected in memory of the fallen comrades in the First World War by the Fuehrer and members of the Bochumer Verein. The inscription at the bottom reads: In memory of the comrades who died in the 1914-1918 World War, the Fuehrer and the members of the Bochumer Verein decided to erect this memorial under the presidency of Field Marshal v. Hindenburg during the first year of the national government of the People's Chancellor Adolf Hitler
