Senegalese Prisoner of War, 1918

Imprisoned Senegalese soldiers in a German base hospital. After the heavy losses of the first months of the war, the French army took to recruiting troops from the French colonies in large numbers and sent them to the Western front. German soldiers especially feared the African soldiers. The foreignness of the African troops resulted in a hateful reaction on them on the German side. In nighttime combat and in close combat, the African soldiers had the reputation of being especially cruel and dangerous.
