The Palatine War of Succession (1688-1697), - often called the War of the Grand Alliance or the War of the League of Augsburg, Nine Years War, was a conflict provoked by the French King Louis XIV to gain the recognition of the Holy Roman Empire of his acquisitions as part of the Reunion policy. The first war aim was the city and fortress of Philippsburg in the Palatinate. The contemporary copper engraving by Romanus de Hooghe shows the siege and destruction of the city by French troops
