Skagerrak guard of honour at the Neue Wache in Berlin
The Navy first took over the guard of honour in front of the Neue Wache (then: Memorial) in Berlin-Mitte on 30 May around 1930. The occasion was the commemoration of the Battle of Skagerrak in World War I, which was celebrated on 30 and 31 May. The marines, accompanied by cameras of the press and a large crowd, marched through the Brandenburg Gate along the street Unter den Linden to the Neue Wache, where they relieved the Reichswehrwache.
