Sketch by Melton Prior showing the battle of the Brits against the Mahdi Army at Tonasi or Tomanieb. The picture shows the recapture of the guns just lost by the ship brigade. The Mahdi Uprising from 1881 to 1898 was a revolt led by Muhammad Ahmad against Anglo-Egyptian rule in the Sudan provinces. It was not until 1898 that the British succeeded in finally smashing the Mahdist State
