Soldiers of the protection force during the Herero uprising

German and local soldiers of the protection force in a bivouac after the battle of Owikokorero during the Herero uprising in German Southwest Africa. On the cot is the wounded sea lieutenant Herrmann, in the middle sits the also injured sea lieutenant and adjutant Schaefer (with sling), right rear stands assistant physician Dr. Jansen. The voluntary medical Kraeger (3rd from right) and a staff physician Dr. Wiemann (2nd from right) sit right. In the battle of Owikokorero between von Glasenapp and the Ovaherero under Tjetjo, the Germans suffered heavy losses
