The engraving Gin Lane (1751) by William Hogarth (1697-1764) depicts the misery in London in the 18th century. Hogarth draws a picture of London characterized by alcoholism and drug addiction. The mother in the foreground for example lets her baby fall while she takes a pinch of snuff
