Subjugation and evangelization of the Saxons
In the Saxon wars of 772-804 Charles the Great fought against the Saxons. In his retinue were some Christian missionaries who baptized the Saxons. The painting is by the German painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach. Widukind or Wittekind, from a Westphalian noble family, led, as Duke of Saxony, dux Saxonum, between 777-785, the resistance movement of the Saxons against Charlemagne. In 785 he converted to Christianity
