English recruits are sworn in on the New Testament of the Bibel. As the troops in France began to shrink, Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener started a large scale recruitment promotion to engage new young people as soldiers. Often, they received only a short training and were then shipped to France to support the remaining troops
