Until the Second World War armored cars (also called tanks') had been used by all armies to support the infantry. Only shortly before the outbreak of World War II did various armies, including the Americans, begin to operate tanks in closed, larger individual units. This was the tactic that brought the Wehrmacht (armed forces) their first victories
