Telegram of the Municipality of Danzig, 1918

In this letter from the Gdansk Magistrate to the Secretary of State for the Interior of the German Reich, the magistrate protests against the decision of American President Woodrow Wilson to transfer Gdansk to the territory of the newly created Poland. The mostly German inhabitants of the city protested against the separation because they considered that due to the decision their right of self-determination has been violated. Gdansk became Free City under the supervision of the British and Poles. The separation of Gdansk from Germany took place according to the regulations of the Versailles Treaty and the League of Nations
