The Tietz department store in Berlin, 1930

The department store Tietz at Alexanderplatz in Berlin was opened in 1904. The Lessinghaus had to make way for the new building. At the time of National Socialism, the name Hertie was formed from the first letters of the first and last name of Hermann Tietz, because the Jewish name was not to be used further. In addition, the Aryanization had led to the appointment of Georg Karg as Managing Director, who completed the sale of the department store chain. Hertie was taken over by Karstadt in 1994
