Victims of the destruction of Pompeii
Pompeii was destroyed and buried under ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Most of the approximately 10, 000 inhabitants died. Many victims were found preserved by volcanic ash, as they were surprised by the catastrophe on the run. The photo was taken during the excavations of the Ring and Fencing School
