View of the former fortress of Masada
After the conquest of Jerusalem in 70 AD some Jewish insurgents succeeded to flee to Masada. The Romans had to besiege the fortress between 71-73 AD until the defenders gave up and killed themselves to avoid falling into the hands of the Romans
