Women preserving fruit, around 1900
The large stove, usually placed in the middle of the kitchen, dominated the entire environment of the middle-class and upper-class household at the turn of the century. It was the central workplace of the cook and her helpers (here when preserving fruit). On the top right are containers for flour, rice, bread rolls, salt, etc
