Wooden bicycle, 1927

A displayed bicycle in the Nyasaland section of the East African Pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition in Wembley. The frame is made of wood, the wheels of reeds and small wooden slats. The wheels are made of cowhide and the chain is made of knotted skin strips of an antelope. The bike was often in use: if the chain became loose, the owner would simply knot it together elsewhere
