Nicholas Murray Butler (1862-1947), American philosopher, diplomat and educator. Seen here as a young man in academic robes. He was President of Columbia University (1902-45), President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (1925-45), and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. He wrote on the subject of psychical research
