Artist's concept of an Earth-sized planet passing in front ?
Artist's concept of an Earth-sized planet passing in front of a sun-like star to show how part of the light from the star is blocked. Detecting extrasolar planets while observing them as they pass in front of the star in our line of view, is called the Extrasolar Photometric Transit Method. This method is useful for discovering earth-sized planets, and it is the method the space based observatory Kepler uses when it looks at more than 150 000 stars simultaneously
