19th century painting of General JEB Stuart's raid around McClellan, which he conducted in June, 1862, with the objective of gathering intelligence. General Stuart formulated this plan of encircling the Union Army of the Potomac led by General George McClellan with Robert E Lee, who had been newly appointed as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.
