Portrait of Dr. Mary Walker. In September 1863, she was employed as a Contract Acting Assistant Surgeon (civilian), becoming the first female surgeon employed by the U.S. Army Surgeon. She is also the only female recipient of the Medal of Honor. Portrait taken circa 1900
