Starships hone their skills in a virtual battlefield
In the early days of the Atean civil war, pilots with combat experience were hard to come by, so both sides began a crash course in pilot training. In addition to the physical training (you had to survive the intense G forces) these young recruits were given intensive VR sessions in the simulator modules. They honed their skills in these virtual battlefields, littered with blinking red carcasses of simulated ships destroyed in practice. But the virtual world is no match for the real, and to give their pilots the training they needed to be lethal in the blackness of space, they had to get their hands dirty. So after thousands of time dilated hours in the VR modules, the rookie pilots were finally given the controls of an actual starship. The objective of this training mission was to use low yield plasma weapons on the target range on the moon. Things were going pretty well until someone accidentally nuked the target moon
