Thaddeus Stevens, a Radical Republican leader who was one of the most powerful members in the U.S. House of Representatives at the time, and focused much of his political attention on civil rights. He also helped to draft the 14th Amendment abolishing slavery because he strongly felt that the Confederacy did not deserve to be protected by the U.S. Constitution due to the American Civil War
