Archaelogical site of ancient city of Tanais in

Rostov Region, Russia. The Tanais archaeological museum-reserve has been found in 1961 upon the sites of the ancient Greek city of the same name pictured in this image. Relying on descriptions and other documents of that time, scientists have restored numerous pieces of Scythian, Sarmatian and Greek weapons, armour and clothes. There are lessons in ancient military science and crafts often organised here for pupils, so they can closely examine and even try on some of the articles, such as crossbows, swords, helmets, etc. Valery Matytsin/ITAR-TASS
