Doctor Leo Bokeria performs surgery, 1997
Moscow, Russia. On May 27 Doctor Leo Bokeria, cardiac surgeon, member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Head of the Bakoulev Scientific Centre of Cardiovascular Surgery, performs the first transmyocardial revascularization surgery in Russia using a special Russian-made carbon dioxide laser. The laser makes tiny channels through the heart muscle to improve blood flow to the heart. This method can help 50 thousand patients who cannot undergo a cardiac shunt surgery. Igor Zotin/ITAR-TASS
