Monument to Alexander II of Russia in Sofia, 1996

Sofia, Bulgaria. The equestrian statue of Emperor Alexander II of Russia was unveiled in 1907 in front of the National Assembly residence. It commemorates the victory in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 which resulted in establishing of the autonomous Principality of Bulgaria de facto independent from the Ottoman Empire. The monument acknowledges the Russian Emperor who declared the war and the Russian soldiers who fought it. Nikolai Malyshev/ITAR-TASS
