Kiev, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. A view of the equestrian statue of Bogdan Khmelnitsky (1595-1657) unveiled in 1888 to mark the 900th anniversary of the Christianisation of Russia. Khmelnitsky was the Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host who led the uprising against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1648 and subsequently signed the 1654 Treaty of Pereyaslav on joining the newly-formed Ukrainian Cossack state to the Tsardom of Russia.
