Monument to Protopope Avvakum Petrov in Nizhny
Nizhny Novgorod Region, USSR. Pictured in this image is the unveiling of the monument to Protopope [senior priest] Avvakum near the village of Grigorovo. Protopope Avvakum was the leader of the Old Believers, the conservative clergy, which separated from the Russian Orthodox Church following Patriarch Nikon's reforms in the 17th century. Avvakum is also considered a pioneer of Russian modern literature. The monument representing Avvakum making sign of the cross was designed by sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov, President of the International Fund for Slavic Literature and Culture, member of the Russian Academy of Arts (L back).
