Arctic, Russia. The Yamal nuclear-powered icebreaker escorting vessels through the Northeast Passage, an Arctic ocean shipping route connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. The Lenin icebreaker was the first nuclear-powered icebreaker launched 40 years ago. Today, Russia has seven nuclear-powered icebreakers in service, including the Sevmorput nuclear-powered icebreaking LASH carrier. Still, their production was stopped due to high production costs.
