Stalin's underground bomb shelter in Kuybyshev, 1990

Kuybyshev, USSR. This building located in Frunze Street 167, was turned into Stalin's underground bomb shelter. On October 15, 1941, the State Committee for Defence took a decision to evacuate key government institutions, including Stalin's General Headquarters, to Kuibyshev and prepare the city to act as the Reserve Capital of the Soviet Union if the Germans reach Moscow. The entrance is located in the courtyard of the building which now houses the Academy of Culture and Arts. Nikolai Nikitin/TASS
